NBBC surprised by closure

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council Crest
Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council understands, through reports in the media, that the Nuneaton-based TJ Hughes store intends to close between the 10th and 14th August 2011.

The Council has not received any prior contact from the administrators and is working hard to establish their intentions so there is minimal impact on the town centre economy.  If it is established that the administrators intend to market the lease for the store then the Council will assist in any way possible as the unit is a valuable asset with a prime location in the town.

Prior to TJ Hughes taking up residence in 2010 NBBC contributed £1.6m towards the repair and improvement to the property which secured a rental income of £250,000 per year, a substantial increase on the previous rate of £95,000 per year.  The Council now has an asset with an open market value of approximately £4.5m.

Cllr Dennis Harvey, Leader of the Council, said:
“First and foremost I am very sorry to hear this news for the local employees of TJ Hughes who thought they had a future with the store and appear to have received this unexpected news overnight.  Personally I am disappointed to hear that Nuneaton’s TJ Hughes will be closing as I have always understood that the Nuneaton store is one of their more profitable stores.  Even as late as yesterday I was speaking to store staff and Council officers who were not aware of any plans for closure.

It is disappointing to hear this news overnight as, thanks to Council investment, the store was renovated and refurbished to a high standard.  We believe the unit is a very desirable one that will appeal to other businesses, but we are now in an extremely complicated financial situation as the administrators are currently paying the lease.”
