Memorial Testing
Memorial testing has become necessary as injuries have been sustained in other parts of the country through falling memorials. Older memorials are constructed from a single piece of stone, whereas more modern memorials are constructed from several sections that are joined together.
Often the reason memorials become unstable is the failure of these joints, but other reasons include kerb stones breaking apart; undermined or unstable foundations; leaning memorials; evidence of structural damage or movement of parts of a memorial from its original position.
Cllr Ian Lloyd, the cabinet member responsible for cemeteries in the Borough, said:
“As a Council, we have a responsibility to ensure that cemeteries and closed church yards are safe places to both visit and work. In accordance with advice issued from the Ministry of Justice and the experience of other local authorities, all headstones and memorials will need to be tested at least every five years.”
“Our main aim is to make sure our cemeteries are safe for all who come along to pay their respects to loved ones who they have lost, but please be assured this will be carried out in a respectful and sensitive way.”
For more information regarding Memorial Testing, please contact Jackie Essex, Cemeteries Officer on (024) 7637 6357.
