Memorial Safety Testing

Stone Cherub Memorial
Following advice from the Health & Safety Executive, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council will be starting a programme of works to ensure that cemeteries and closed churchyards are safe places to both visit and work, this is due to the number of injuries around the Country from unsafe memorials. Therefore in accordance with this all headstones and memorials will be tested.

Testing has been scheduled to start from November 2007, but prior to this there will be a number of opportunities for those with memorials within the Borough Cemeteries to obtain more information and advice.  On Wednesday, 17th October at Oaston Road Cemetery Chapel between 10.00am and 12noon, and again on Wednesday, 24th October in the Council Chamber at the Town Hall from 6.30pm to 9.00pm, public open meetings have been arranged to obtain more information about this necessary work.  At the meeting, both the Bereavement Officer and local Monumental Masons will be on hand to give information about the next steps in this process.  There will also be an opportunity to ask questions, and view a specially made video on what will happen during testing.

Councillor Neil Phillips, Portfolio Holder for culture and recreation said today,

“As a council we have a duty to visitors and workers to our cemeteries and closed churchyards, thus the requirement to evaluate the safety of headstones and memorials.

With cemeteries being a sensitive issue, I would ask concerned residents to attend the meetings above, to attain more information and ask questions. The safety evaluation will be performed in a safe and respectful manner by fully trained staff.”

The programme for the testing of memorials has been identified in order as Stockingford (Bucks Hill), Coventry Road, Bedworth, Attleborough Cemetery, Marston Lane, Bedworth, Oaston Road, Cemetery, with closed Churchyards being done in the near future.  For more information regarding Memorial Testing, please contact Diane Bird, Bereavement Officer on (024) 7637 6357.
