Christmas Waste Collections

Residents are encouraged to continue to put out their bins for collection over the festive period – but one day later than usual.

For the weeks beginning Monday, December 26 and Monday, January 2, bin collections will take place one day later than usual.

So if your bin collection is normally on a Monday, put your bin out for collection on a Tuesday, and if your collection is usually a Tuesday put your bin out on the Wednesday, and so on…

This even applies to residents whose bin collection day is usually a Friday as the refuse and recycling collection teams will be working on Saturdays, for two weeks only over the festive period, to make sure that collection services are not disrupted.

The temporary change to the collection service has been introduced as a result of Christmas and New Year’s Day falling on a Sunday this year meaning the two Mondays will be a non-working day for Council staff.

Cllr Bill Sheppard, the cabinet member responsible for the waste collection service, said:

“A large amount of waste and recycling is generated in households over the festive period so it is important that no home misses out on a bin collection, as has sometimes happened in the past.

“Our refuse and recycling collection teams will therefore be working on Saturdays for two weeks over the festive period so that no bins are left un-emptied – all we ask is that people put their bin out for collection one day later than usual.

“Don’t forget, if you have extra waste to be recycled you can place this alongside your brown lidded bin on your recycling collection day, and we will be happy to take an unlimited amount of recyclable materials.”
