Does licensing apply to all campsites?

A licence is required if land is used for camping purposes on more than 42 days consecutively or more that 60 days in 12 consecutive months.  Conditions may be attached to a licence.
This applies to tents, vans etc:

Exemptions are made for:
  • Organisations exempted from requiring a licence eg. Caravan Club
  • Caravans kept on land by the owner and associated with the owners dwelling house and occupied by the owner or owner’s household.
  • Kept on agricultural land and used for habitation only at certain seasons and by people employed in farming on that land.
  • For caravans not being lived in.

Who should apply for the licence?

The person who occupies the land.  This will normally be the land owner.

What is the cost of the licence?

There is no fee associated with the licence.

Planning permission

Applicants must consult with the Council’s Planning Officers to confirm whether or not planning permission is required.  Contact the planning dept on 024 7637 6328.

What are the penalties for failing to obtain a licence?

A person failing to obtain a necessary licence or comply with conditions attached to the licence, shall be liable to a fine.

Failed application redress:

If an applicant is refused a licence they may appeal to their local Magistrate's court.

Licence holder redress:

A licence holder may appeal against a condition attached to a licence to their local Magistrate's court.
