What is Community Transport?
The community transport sector has evolved in response to the unmet transport needs of the residents of Warwickshire.
Large areas of Warwickshire are rural where these needs can arise in smaller settlements away from the County's town and city centres. Community transport has an important role in 'filling gaps' in the mainstream public transport network.
Who is it for?
- Anyone facing some kind of transport barrier that prevents them accessing services or employment can usually find or be helped to find a community transport service to assist them overcome this.
- Some of the users may be experiencing a temporary or permanent illness, disability or mobility problem that makes it difficult to use ordinary public transport.
- Others may be persons who are geographically isolated or socially excluded because they do not have access to private or affordable transport.
Who Provides it?
Often it is provided by not-for profit organisations working in the community and voluntary sectors.
Examples are ‘Ring and Ride’ (or 'Dial-a-Ride') services, voluntary car schemes, community transport minibus operators and ‘Wheels to Work’.
However, all transport providers including commercial operators and taxi companies, may choose to be involved in delivering services that are like community transport. Warwickshire’s Flexibus services, for example, are provided by a commercial operator.
