National Grid Tree Warden Scheme
This scheme was first set up in 1987 in East Sussex and Leicestershire in the aftermath of the Great Storm. Since then the scheme, led by the Tree Council, has spread across the nation, reaching Nuneaton and Bedworth in 1998.
Our Tree Wardens are currently the only ones in Warwickshire and form part of a larger network of 7,500 nationwide.
The scheme is run locally and Tree Wardens are volunteers who have an interest in trees. No experience is necessary to become a Tree Warden but enthusiasm is definitely a bonus! Even if you only have a few hours a month you can still become a Tree Warden.
So far they are involved in the "Search for Warwickshire’s Oldest Tree", surveying hedgerows across the Borough and collecting local seed to grow into trees. Additionally, they have attended Forums with other Tree Wardens from all over the West Midlands.
The project “Preserve Our Trees” started in 2002 and involves the inspection of all the Tree Preservation Orders in the Borough. To date over 1500 trees having been surveyed and the information collected has been used to update the Council’s records helping to ensure their accuracy.
