Wasps
The Borough Council has an efficient and professional pest control service for the treatment of wasps but there is a charge for this service:
Charges
- A full treatment service for wasps nests in domestic premises is available at a charge of £65.50, (a discounted rate of £16.50 is available for those in receipt of specified benefits). The charge includes all necessary revisits to treat the single infestation and all associated materials and labour costs.
- Business Properties - £65.50 per nest
- If, at the time of the visit, a treatment cannot be carried out (for example, the nest is found to be a bees' nest or the nest is no longer occupied) a fee of £16.50 will be retained for the callout and the balance of the charge will be refunded. If this is the case you will be advised at the time of the visit.
Description:
- Yellow and black striped thorax and abdomen
- Around 2cm in length
- Life span April-October
- The much larger queens will be sighted in late February/March when they go in search of a suitable nest sight
- The queens will again be seen late October when they look for warm dry areas for winter hibernation.
Facts about Wasps
The queen wasp will begin to build her nest in early spring time, the nest starts off life about the size of a golf ball and will eventually progress to the size of a football and even bigger:
- A single nest can house many thousands of wasps
- The nest is made up of layers of pulped wood
- Creamy brownish in colour
- Wasps feed on insect larva and small insects
- Wasps are also able to string repeatedly
- If left alone the wasps will die off naturally during the onset off severe weather.
Treatment
If you have a wasps nest we do not recommend treating it yourself as wasps are very protective of their nest and there is a greater danger of being stung, however there are treatments available on high street.
Wasps nests are usually successfully treated after one application of insecticide however occasionally a revisit is required; the current fee will include a revisit.
Wasp nest treatment is not always possible where it is at a very high level (over the eaves of the first story house or in unlit or unboarded loft spaces) it is at the discretion of the pest control officer to determine whether treatment can be carried out.
In cases where wasp infestations present a safety risk to the occupiers of the dwelling or the general public, every effort will be made to treat as quickly as possible. Examples of a safety risk may include near a school, public footpath or where access to/from a property is prevented.
