Foxes
The Borough Council does not offer a service for the treatment of foxes. Details of pest control contractors can be obtained from the yellow pages or via the British Pest Control Association (BPCA) who can be contacted on 0870 609 2687 or visit their website at www.bpca.org.uk
Although the Borough Council does not provide a service for the treatment of foxes you may find the following advice of some help if you are experiencing problems:
- Refuse should be stored in a secure location and only put out for collection on the actual morning the waste is collected, not the night before.
- Food should NOT be given to foxes or left out for birds/cats/dogs, as this will only encourage them further.
- Food should not be placed on open compost heaps. Such an action would also encourage rats into your garden.
- Provide secure, fox-proof accommodation for vulnerable pets, as foxes can kill small pets if the opportunity arises.
- If you find foxes have been digging in your garden, loosely fill in any excavations as they appear, checking that they are empty first.
- Chemical repellents can be used to deter foxes. These can be bought at most garden centres. The effectiveness of such repellents seems to be quite variable and so it is important to follow the instructions thoroughly and safely.
- Fencing up to at least 2 metres high would help prevent foxes entering your garden. Ideally, the fence should have a 30cm overhang at the top and 30cm buried in the ground.
Please note that it is illegal to use odorous substances such as creosote, diesel oil or any poisonous bait.
Spread of Disease

If you continue to experience problems with foxes there are many private pest control companies who carry out treatments who should be contacted. It is a specialist job to treat for foxes, requiring specific knowledge in order to carry out the work safely and comply with legislative requirements.
Details of contractors can be obtained from the British Pest Control Association (BPCA) who can be contacted on 0870 609 2687 or alternatively visit their website at www.bpca.org.uk
