Bedbugs
The Borough Council has an efficient and professional pest control service for the treatment of bedbugs but there is a charge for this service:
Charges
- A full treatment service for bedbug infestations in domestic premises is available at a charge of £65.50 (a discounted rate of £16.50 is available for those in receipt of specified benefits). The charge includes all necessary revisits to treat the single infestation and all associated materials and labour costs.
- If at the time of the visit, a treatment cannot be carried out (for example, the insects are found not to be bedbugs) a fee of £16.50 will be retained for the callout and the balance of the charge will be refunded. If this is the case, you will be advised at the time of the visit.
Description of pest:
- Dark brown/mahogany in colour
- Transparent if not fed for some time
- Adult around 6mm long
- Oval in shape
- Very flat (except directly after a feed)
- Eggs are creamy white normally found in clusters on headboard/base of bed
- Young bed bugs (nymphs) are tiny in comparison to adults
Facts about bed bugs
- They can ingest up to seven times their weight in blood during a feeding session
- They emerge whilst you are sleeping to feed on your blood
- They live around headboards/base of bed, furniture and in cracks and crevices such as behind skirting boards
Signs that you may have bed bugs
- Bites to upper part of the body
- Blood spots on sheets/duvet
- Insect living around headboard or base of bed
- Black marks (like black ink spots) again around the headboard/base of bed and in bad cases around skirting boards/walls and bedroom furniture
How did I get bed bugs?
- They can be already living in any second-hand beds or bedroom furniture that you may have bought or obtained.
- Staying in already infested accommodation such as a hotel/holiday home where they will crawl into luggage, then crawl back out once you are home.
- They can migrate from property to property. They can have already been in your home when you moved in (if recently moved).
- Having someone stay at your home who has them in their luggage from their own home.
Treatment
- You will probably need professional help dealing with an infestation of bedbugs; Nuneaton Borough Council can provide you with a chargeable service.
- Please ensure that rooms to be sprayed are ready for the Pest Control Officer by ensuring areas are free from clutter and are easy to access.
- The infested rooms will be sprayed with insecticides, paying particular attention to bed frames, skirting boards, wall switches and any other cracks and crevices likely to shelter bugs.
- The number of revisits required will depend upon the nature and level of infestation and guidance will be given by the Pest Control Officer on the first visit.
The Borough Council will be happy to advise you if you suspect that you may have bed bugs.
