Human Rights Act 1998

Human Rights Picture
The Human Rights Act 1998 (HRA) came into force in October 2000.

The Government introduced the HRA to create a society in which the rights and responsibilities of individuals are properly balanced.

The HRA applies to public, not private bodes. All public bodies must ensure that everything they do is compatible with Convention rights unless an Act of Parliament makes that impossible. It is unlawful for a public authority to act incompatible with the Convention rights.

In light of the above, the Council has written a policy to ensure the Council complies and commits to the principles of Human Rights.
